Thom Pain (based on nothing) by Will Eno
Premiere Tuesday, December 8th 2020 at 20:00
Performances December 9th - 10th 2020 at 20:00
Das OFF Theater, Kirchengasse 41, 1070 Wien
He's just like you, except worse. He wants to save his life, to save your life - in that order. In his quest for salvation, he'll stop at nothing, be distracted by nothing, except maybe a piece of lint, or the woman in the second row.
Thom Pain (based on nothing) opened at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2004, receiving rave reviews and winning the First Fringe Award, among other prizes. Dubbed “stand-up existentialism” by The New York Times, it is lyrical and deadpan, both sardonic and sincere. It is Thom Pain - in the camouflage of the common man - fumbling with his heart, squinting into the light. It has since then been performed in over 100 productions across the United States and the world, most notable productions including the Soho Theatre in London and Off-Broadway in New York City.
Starring: Lauri Elling as Thom Pain
Directed by: Jason Cloud
Assistant Director: Sandy Winne
Sound Design: Daniel Benedek
Photography: George Mallas
With special thanks to Roo Bar, The Church International Pub and Bezirksvorstehung Neubau

Winterreise at the Wiener Konzerthaus
Saturday Sep 28th 2019 at Wiener Konzerthaus
Following their stage and ballet adaptation at the Yamaha Concert Hall in December 2018, Mental Eclipse Theater House brings two of their artists to perform Schubert’s Winterreise, in the more traditional, intimate Liederabend setting at the Wiener Konzerthaus.
Composed to two volumes of poems by Wilhelm Müller, Winterreise follows a wandering stranger on a journey to seek resolution amidst a bleak winter landscape. Victoria Choi, one of Oper in der Krypta’s leading pianists joins bass-baritone Jason Cloud on this trek through ice and snow.
“The songs felt eerily familiar to me, and have since moved me in a direction that ultimately changed my way of perceiving the world. Their tunes were hauntingly captivating, following me around like the crow itself. They would surprisingly come up on me in my times of solitude and eventually lead to my decision to interpret it. I devoted myself to learning the cycle inside and out,” says Cloud.
Winterreise will be presented in the Schubert Saal at the Wiener Konzerthaus on Saturday, September 28th 2019 at 19:30.
Tickets are available through 01/242002 and [email protected]
What makes two young musicians from the US so fascinated with this piece?
Given the historic background in Schubert and Müller’s time, Winterreise can also be interpreted as a socio-political narrative and the question of identity, which has withstood the test of time and is still relevant to this day. Right from the first verses of Gute Nacht we are reminded of just how fremd we ourselves are, in so many ways. Being about the same age as the protagonist (late 20s), I have no troubles identifying with him. The beginning of adulthood, along with which the hopes and dreams we’ve once had disappear. Feeling alone in a world in which we face increasingly harder trials. The love, remorse and the bitterness he feels are quite familiar to me.
Why is the Liederabend so compelling to you?
A Liederabend to me is one of the most genuine musical performances one can give. Incomparable to opera and operetta, this intimacy is what makes art songs so powerful. In a Lied the story is told lyrically, not dramatically, its poetic beauty is in the words and the music, but the ways of materializing them are endless. You can go down to the gentlest pianissimo, which is never seen on the operatic stage. We bare our souls to the audience, hiding nothing. And with Winterreise, it is especially difficult to remain impersonal.
What are your favorite parts of the text?
Regarding songs that I find particularly moving, the line “jeder Strom wird’s Meer gewinnen, jedes Leiden auch sein Grab” from the song Irrlicht is a glimmer of hope in a place where all roads lead to the same place. By contrast “Wein, wein auf meiner Hoffnung Grab” from Letzte Hoffnung is a heart-wrenching cry of desperation. I too have trembled at the sight of my hopes hanging by the dry and fragile leaf stalk.

My Contribution to the Winterreise Database
Abstract: A dramatic monologue suspended in darkness and despair rather than a story with a plot, this collection of ghastly songs is nothing like the works of Schubert’s peers during the Romantic Era. Having Winterreise in one’s repertoire is regarded as a milestone of maturity for many singers, due to its solemn and pensive subject matter.
Nevertheless, this claim can be left open for discussion.

Mental Eclipse Announces New Dates for 2019
Jack Mormon
May 21st and 28th
Spektakel, Hamburgerstraße 14, 1050 Wien
Jack Mormon is an intense, two-act narrative on not just the crippling pressure of one’s own faith, but society’s expectations altogether.
“The two-year journey the missionaries are required to pursue has a significant impact on youth suicide and depression. Jack stands up for for those who were not given a second chance”
Staged as a tragicomedy, Mental Eclipse Theater House’s trademark whimsicality sweetens the otherwise bitter piece. Although well-received by the audience, author and real-life member Jason Cloud was heavily criticized by the Church’s media representatives and opinion leaders in Austria before the production’s premiere in 2017.

The Flick by Annie Baker
Opening night Monday, Jan 21st 2019 at Theater Drachengasse
Production dates Jan 22nd - Feb 2nd 2019 In a run-down movie theater in central Massachusetts, three underpaid employees mop the floors and attend to one of the last 35 millimeter film projectors in the state. Their tiny battles and not-so-tiny heartbreaks play out in the empty aisles, becoming more gripping than the lackluster, second-run movies on screen. They are onto a scam, making extra money on tickets, but the new employee - who is African American - is less enthusiastic about breaking the law, as he knows he’ll be the first one accused. With keen insight and a finely-tuned comic eye, The Flick is a hilarious and heart-rending cry for authenticity in a fast-changing world. Winner of the coveted Susan Smith Blackburn Prize and OBIE Award in 2013, and the 2014 Pulitzer Prize for drama. Thursday Dec 13th at 20:00 Thursday Dec 20th 2018 at 20:00 Friday Dec 21st 2018 at 20:00 A young man leaving his love and old life behind and ventures out into the unknown. Loss of innocence. Destruction of beauty. Existential doubt. "I've been told repeatedly that I'm too young to be doing this cycle, but these songs are really moving and can change the way one perceives a cruel world and people driven by self-interest. Just about everyone is at one stage of it in their own lives. Soon you will hear and understand, in the words of Schubert himself." |

Featured Role
The Fall of Alice (2018)
"I wanted to cast this pale, sickly glow on Lewis Carroll’s heroine and give her shelter from her personal problems in her own mind. I made Alice abandon the safety of her home, navigate through a barren Wonderland, and face harder trials and decisions with each step. I kept pushing her in further until she was standing on the edge. We had to think outside the box to ensure that this production would be extra special, while still capturing the essence of the original." More about The Fall of Alice |
